Yumi (ShunSen)

Born in Fuji City at the base of majestic Mt Fuji it is not surprising that multi-award winning Yumi was drawn to the artistry and symmetry of “Shodo”, Japanese calligraphy.

Yumi’s calligraphy journey started at the age of five and at the age of seven she realised that she had found her calling.

As Yumi’s study progressed, her talents were widely recognised, and at eighteen, she was accepted into the prestigious Japan Calligraphy Arts College. It was here that she came under the tutelage of two of Japan’s most famous calligraphy masters, Shioneri Shinsen and the legendary Ishibashi Saisui who until his death, was revered as a living treasure of Japan. It was also during this period that Yumi adopted the pen name “Shunsen”, shun meaning “spring” and sen being taken from the name of one of her famous tutors

Graduating as a master calligrapher, Yumi’s post-graduate studies saw her achieve the title of advanced master and finally earn the distinction of becoming a master instructor.

The traditional Japanese art of Shodo is not just about writing stylish characters. It is an artistic means of conveying meaningful expressions, philosophical messages and heartfelt emotions through the sense of one’s own feelings.

Through my humble abilities, I hope you can enjoy some of the emotions and feelings experienced in my world of Shodo.
